Bruce Lee’s Legacy is Alive & Well in SoCal!
By Richard Bennett, AMAM Correspondent
Jun Fan Gung Fu - Jeet Kune Do was developed in the 1960’s and was further evolved in the early 1970’s by its founder, the legendary action film-star Bruce Lee. Although JKD was derived from more than one source of martial arts, its roots clearly come from Wing Chun Gung Fu, Boxing and even Fencing. Bruce Lee formed his first group of students in Seattle, WA., upon arriving stateside from Hong Kong, well before moving to Oakland, CA. where his teaching and personal approach continued to develop. Next, he moved further south into Los Angeles, CA. to pursue roles in film and television and opened up a school (kwoon) in the Chinatown district. There, he expanded greatly and accepted some celebrity students, such as famous Hollywood actors Steve McQueen, James Coburn, James Garner, as well as basketball giant Kareem Abdul Jabbar.
An established local disciple teaches Bruce Lee’s ground-breaking martial arts in Westminster, CA.
Originally referred to as “Jun Fan Gung Fu” but now more widely known as “Jeet Kune Do”, is currently being taught by Orange County resident (Sifu) Paul S. Lewis at a fairly unassuming martial arts gym called Cube Self Defense & Fitness Studio, which is located at 7849 Westminster Ave. in Westminster, CA. 92683. Their phone number is (714) 417-4510 and their new website can be viewed here: www.cubeselfdefense.com
Recently, Cube Self Defense & Fitness Studio played host to an exciting sporting event which was designed to pay tribute to Bruce Lee and Jeet Kune Do. This event was titled, “IJKDC 2016” and was conducted by the International JKD Comparison organization, which was founded in 2014 by Paul S. Lewis to help honor his famous martial arts lineage.
IJKDC 2016 featured many enthusiastic participants from various schools around the country and even internationally. Each of them proved eager to exchange their developing fighting-skills in a friendly but competitive environment. This unique engagement provided them a quality platform to make a fair comparison, some for the very first time. Participants were carefully paired up by weight classes and experience levels. Fairness, safety concerns and good sportsmanship was in focus.
The event featured three primary segments. The first being “Trapping” consisted of rapid executions of close-range striking, the second resembled freeform kickboxing that allowed for timed rounds of punching and kicking combinations, and the third was confined to multiple grappling and submission(s) techniques. After the event was completed, special prizes and awards were to be presented to each of the participants. The organizers also pre-arranged for a local provider to supply plenty of pizza and refreshments for everyone to enjoy during the course of the long day of activities.
While, still in a continuous development stage, IJKDC 2016 was well-received by everyone involved. Delighted with the positive results, studio owner (Sensei) Tuan Nguyen and Paul S. Lewis are thankful that none of the able bodied participants received any serious injuries as a result of their efforts, and that everyone in attendance seemed to thoroughly enjoy the entire experience!
Plans are already underway for IJKDC 2017. So, for anybody interested in learning more about future events, please refer to the
